🍅 The Origin of the Tomato Timer
The Pomodoro Technique was invented by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s while he was a
university student struggling to focus. He grabbed a tomato-shaped kitchen timer ("pomodoro" is Italian for
tomato) and challenged himself to study for just 10 minutes. The rest is productivity history!
🤯 Wacky Facts
- The original technique uses exactly 25 minutes because that's how long Cirillo's kitchen
timer could go
- Studies show the average human attention span has dropped to 8 seconds—less than a
goldfish!
- NASA found that a 26-minute nap improves pilot performance by 34%—similar to a Pomodoro
break
- The technique has been translated into 30+ languages
💡 Useful Tips
- Protect the Pomodoro: If interrupted, the session doesn't count—restart it
- Track your Pomodoros: Estimate tasks in "Pomodoros" to improve planning over time
- Take REAL breaks: Step away from the screen. Stretch. Hydrate. Look at something 20 feet
away
- Adjust the duration: Some people focus better with 50/10 or 90/20 splits. Experiment!
- After 4 Pomodoros: Take a longer 15-30 minute break to recharge fully
