A nominal 27-inch 16:9 screen is approximately 23.53 inches wide and 13.24 inches high. Those figures describe a theoretical screen rectangle. The monitor’s bezel, housing, stand and cable space need separate measurements before you decide whether it fits a desk.
What the diagonal can calculate
For a 16:9 rectangle with diagonal D, width is D × 16 ÷ √337 and height is D × 9 ÷ √337. The table applies that geometry to nominal diagonals; it is not a list of measured products.
| Nominal 16:9 diagonal | Calculated width | Calculated height | Calculated width in mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 inches | 20.92 inches | 11.77 inches | 531.3 mm |
| 27 inches | 23.53 inches | 13.24 inches | 597.7 mm |
| 32 inches | 27.89 inches | 15.69 inches | 708.4 mm |
A different aspect ratio requires different inputs. The table also does not include bezel width or the depth of any stand.
Use the manufacturer’s assembled dimensions
The Dell P2722H manual separates viewing specifications from dimensions with and without the stand. Its datasheet likewise treats diagonal and assembled size as different specifications.
The ASUS VA27DQF/VA27UQSB comparison supplies physical dimensions for the exact models. Keep each field attached to the correct model column. A shared 27-inch label is not evidence of an identical case or stand.
Make a placement record
| Fit question | Specification or measurement needed |
|---|---|
| Will the case fit between objects? | Exact assembled width and height at the intended position |
| Will the base fit the desktop? | Stand depth, footprint and permitted placement |
| Is a shelf above it compatible? | Height-adjustment range and needed clearance |
| Can the cables connect? | Port position, connector access and cable movement |
| Will an arm replace the stand? | Exact mount, weight and clearance requirements |
Measure the usable desk area, rather than its advertised overall dimensions alone. A rear obstruction or cable arrangement can occupy space that a stand-only figure leaves out.
For two monitors, start with two actual case widths and the intended arrangement. Angling them changes the footprint and movement, so doubling the theoretical screen width is insufficient to certify a dual-monitor setup.
What the calculation cannot answer
The geometry does not prescribe an ideal viewing distance, determine text comfort or assess ergonomics for an individual. It also cannot show whether a monitor arm accepts the device or whether the desk supports that mount.
Use the calculation to understand screen area, then use exact model instructions for physical placement. Keep those two decisions visible in the record.
If mounting is part of the plan, use the monitor arm buying guide for that separate compatibility check after resolving the screen and case dimensions.
Method
We checked the linked manufacturer specifications on October 11, 2026 and independently calculated the nominal table. No monitor or desk was measured. The original contribution is the separation of screen geometry from assembled fit; the numbers are mathematical examples, not a physical clearance guarantee.
